Basic Search Engine Optimisation Theory
Everyone wants their website to be the top of search engines, but how do they (search engines) rank the millions of websites on the internet? Search Engines use a multitude of different methods however get these 3 things right and you'll be 95% of the way there.
1. Content
It's all about Keywords (the words you want to be ranked highly for); the number of times your keywords appears on the page without looking un-natural the better. Don't over do it but take a close look at your current website does the words you want to be ranked highly for appear more than about once?
2. Code
Unless you know about HTML there isn't much you can do with this however, if you are getting a website developed ensure the web design company builds it in a search engine friendly manner. This includes text not pictures of text, compliant to web standards (http://validator.w3.org/), meta data, no frames and search engine friendly urls.
3. Links
The number of other websites that link to your. The general rule here is the more the better, but it also helps if the links are from relevant websites (e.g. If you are a chocolate producer having a sweet shop website link to yours).
Choosing the right company.
Make sure you know what you are paying for, Search Engine Optimisation isn't rocket science, any company that is reluctant to explain their methods probably don't have your best interests at heart. There are methods of SEO which are considered unethical and if search engines find your website is involved in these activity your website may be banned completely.
