XHTML
XHTML is a stricter and cleaner version of HTML. It is a W3C recommendation and XHTML 1.0 became a W3C recommendation January 26, 2000.
A W3C recommendation means that the specification is stable, that it has been reviewed by the W3C membership, and that the specification is now a Web standard. W3C defines XHTML as the latest version of HTML and XHTML will gradually fully replace HTML.
What is XHTML and how is it relevant to web design?

We have reached a point where many of the millions of webpages on the internet today contain "badly" programmed webpages, this in turn may lead to low search engine rankings, no browser compatibility, inaccessibility, and errors.
XML is a markup language where everything has to be marked up correctly, which results in "well-formed" documents. XML was designed to describe data and HTML was designed to display data and by combining the two we have XHTML. Thus producing "well-formed" web pages.
